Outdoor Branding Photography: Why It Works for Modern Personal Brands

Branding photography doesn’t have to happen in a studio. In fact, many professionals choose to photograph their branding sessions outdoors to create images that feel natural, approachable, and visually interesting. Outdoor locations can offer beautiful natural light, a variety of textures and backgrounds, and a relaxed environment that helps clients feel comfortable in front of the camera. For entrepreneurs, small business owners, and those building a personal brand, these elements can make branding images feel authentic and engaging.

Meet Meredith! Meredith is a nurse practitioner and founder of New Life Aesthetics in Raleigh. She helps her clients look and feel their best, and she brought that same confidence to her branding session. We photographed her at North Hills in Raleigh (with prior permission) for a fresh, modern set of images she can use across her website and social media. And man, did she ever kill the shoot!

As a branding photographer in Raleigh, I often work with clients who want images that feel polished but not overly formal. Outdoor locations can be a perfect solution with some planning. I will give you some tips for finding the perfect outdoor location, and avoiding some common mistakes.

Why Outdoor Branding Photos Work So Well

Outdoor branding sessions offer several advantages that can help elevate your brand images.

Natural Light Creates a Flattering Look

Natural light is soft, dimensional, and incredibly flattering when done correctly. It creates images that feel bright, fresh, and professional without feeling overly staged. For many professionals, this style aligns perfectly with a brand that feels approachable and modern.

A Variety of Backgrounds in One Session

One of the biggest advantages of photographing outdoors is the variety of locations we can incorporate into a single session. In just a short walk we can photograph:

  • Architectural backgrounds
  • Greenery and natural elements
  • Clean urban spaces
  • Textured walls or walkways

This variety creates a library of images that can be used across your website, social media, marketing materials, and LinkedIn.

A More Relaxed Atmosphere

Many clients tell me they feel more relaxed outdoors than in a studio environment. Walking between locations and using the surroundings naturally helps people loosen up and feel more comfortable in front of the camera. That relaxed energy often leads to the most natural expressions.

Challenges of Outdoor Branding Sessions (And How We Plan for Them)

Outdoor sessions can produce incredible images, but they also require careful planning, as they have many more variables to account for.

Timing Matters

Lighting changes quickly outdoors, so sessions are usually scheduled during the best natural light hours – early morning or late afternoon. While some locations allow flexibility in timing, in general mid day light is especially harsh and unflattering. In a shorter headshot session outdoors, you can get away with popping out during the workday to grab a few shots but when planning for a longer branding session with multiple looks and backgrounds you want a more consistent lighting situation.

Managing Crowds

Public spaces can get busy, especially in popular areas. Choosing the right time of day and knowing quieter areas makes a big difference. It can be incredibly stressful to be photographed in front of an audience.

Weather Considerations

Hello Raleigh weather! Weather is always a factor with outdoor shoots. This means more than just a rainy day. You need to factor:

  • Wind blowing in your hair
  • Heat causing you to sweat through your shirts
  • Humidity and what that can do to a blowout
  • Cold days that are red nose
  • The yellow pollen of doom

Outfit Changes (and schlepping your stuff!)

With the most branding sessions we are shooting multiple looks, which means multiple outfit changes. Outside. In public. I have a pop-up tent that I can bring along, and while it’s not glamorous, it does get the job done. We can try to shoot around one home based spot, where you can go back to your car for changes. It also never hurts to reach out to local businesses in the area. Sometimes they allow output changes in the bathrooms, and even a few side photos inside – it never hurts to ask!

Having flexible plans (and backup locations if possible) is a necessity. With the right planning and experience, these challenges are easy to manage. I recommend bringing along a friend for outdoor branding shoots. They can help manage your stuff, keep an eye on hair as it blows and be your personal hype person as we move along.

Getting the Incidental Shots

Incidental photos have you working, using brand items, and incorporating props can be a little trickier to pull outdoor sessions. Finding a local coffee shop or other location with tables can bridge that gap a little, but it’s not a perfect solution. If these photos are important to you, an outdoor shoot may not be the right fit. Or better yet, find a rental location with outdoor options nearby and split your time.

Choosing the Best Raleigh Outdoor Location

Raleigh offers a beautiful variety of locations for outdoor branding photography, from modern spaces like Raleigh Union Station to parks, gardens, and architectural backdrops throughout the city. These environments allow us to create branding images that feel natural, professional, and visually distinctive. Finding the right outdoor location is an important part of planning a successful branding session. When scouting locations, I look for spaces that offer:

  • Good natural light
  • A mix of textures and backgrounds
  • Areas with greenery or natural elements
  • Clean architectural lines
  • Enough space for lighting and movement
  • Areas without heavy foot traffic

Locations like North Hills in Raleigh are great because they offer a mix of modern architecture, greenery, and open spaces that photograph beautifully. Keep in mind that many locations require prior approval before shooting. In this case, North Hills was kind enough to allow us permission for this shoot of Meredith, but it took a few weeks of planning. Do some leg work in your planning. What area do you work in? Live in? Love to visit? Reach out to local businesses, pay attention to spots that match your vibe. There are many popular spots that I can recommend, but finding something unique to you is even better.

When Outdoor Branding Photos Are the Perfect Fit

Many brands can benefit from outdoor sessions, but they work especially well for:

  • Entrepreneurs and small business owners without a physical location
  • Wellness and lifestyle brands
  • Coaches and consultants
  • Creatives and designers
  • Professionals who want a relaxed, approachable brand image

If your brand incorporates elements of nature, wellness, or lifestyle, outdoor branding photography can be an especially natural fit.

Last minute Tips

  • Use professionals for hair and makeup to hold up to the elements.
  • Consider splitting your time between a rental studio, and outdoors for the most variety.
  • Scout Locations that fit your brand and esthetic.
  • Bring along a friend for support.
  • Allow your schedule to be flexible for weather reschedules.
  • Know in advance that we will run into challenges along the way, and that is ok!

FAQ: Outdoor Branding Photography

Are outdoor branding photos professional enough?

Yes. With the right lighting and location, outdoor branding images can look polished, modern, and professional while still feeling natural and approachable. Using natural light does not simply mean shooting outdoors – it means finding the best available light, the right angles, and maximizing the area we are working in.

What should I wear for an outdoor branding session?

Solid colors and simple patterns photograph best outdoors. Coordinating your outfits with your brand colors can also help create a cohesive look across your marketing. When selecting clothes for outdoor branding shoots, consider the location. Is it downtown with cool grey tones or in a natural area where the primary backdrop is green? I got more into What to Wear for Branding Photos on this page.

What if the weather changes?

Outdoor sessions are carefully planned around weather conditions. In days getting closer to recession we will keep an eye on the weather. Having an indoor backup is always a good idea, but if there’s any doubt that the day will be perfect we will reschedule.
