Sneak Peek! | North Raleigh Family Portraits

(Just a reminder that we are closed July 8th and emails will be answered then!)  This is a very sneaky peek since I only looked through the pictures from this session briefly before closing up for vacation but I knew I had to grab a few for mom and dad.  Even at first glance I could hardly choose which ones to share, they are gorgeous people!

Sneak Peek! | Foggy day at Duke Gardens

(Just a reminder that we are closed today through July 8th although I am here and still very much working - soon we will be closed, I promise kids!)  It is so hard to plan around weather.  You never know from weather reports alone what the next day will hold, and sometimes it’s just not easy to reschedule on a mornings notice if parents have made arrangements to miss work/school/etc.  But we can make it work, even days like this one that gave us a nice heavy layer of fog to work with in addition to thick cloud cover.  Light is so important in photography, and waiting for the right light in any situation is worth it.  I know parents sometime wonder why I am not shooting at times through out a session, especially when their kid is doing something downright adorable.  Creating portraits is more than just the moment itself (for snapshots, by all means grab the moment!), I’m watching the light on your child’s face, what’s happening around and behind them, looking for distracting elements that may take away from the image, making sure the position the child is in is flattering, and on and on.  If I don’t think all those factors are working together to create a gorgeous portrait, I won’t shoot it.  Days that are heavily overcast can make for more challenging conditions, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it just requires a little more creativity!

You may recognize this gorgeous little girl as a gorgeous little baby on my site.  And this time I got to meet little brother too who was just as sweet as can be and full of spunk.  We has a great morning!

Closing Up Shop

My office will be closed June 25th - July 8th for some really, truly, more than ever needed family time.  I will check email from time to time so if you’re expecting and need to schedule a newborn session please note that in the subject line of your email.

Have a very wonderful 4th of July!

What To Wear Wednesday | Senior Portraits for the Guys

This week’s look is another borrowed from friend and photographer Lisa Dillon.  These senior looks are from Buckle.com and Aeropostale.com but you can mix and match pieces from just about anywhere to create unique looks.  As with the girl looks accessories are key - bring different belts, bracelets, shoes, glasses, etc for every outfit.  Wear a variety of shorts, jeans and khakis, some casual outfits and at least one on the dressy side.

Sneak Peek! | Chapel Hill Arboretum Portraits

Another little cutie for you; one that braved the heat, the threat of thunderstorms and a swarm of mosquitoes all in the name of portraiture.  After stepping on something prickley just a few minutes in he was such a trouper and held it together through the rest of the morning, but it paid off for him with a romp through mud of the creek in the end.  Thanks for enduring the occasional casualties of photography sessions Mom and Dad, it was so worth it!

Sneak Peek! | Cary Children’s Portraits

I don’t know how many sessions I have had with this family at this point, quite a few.  They were a family of four and we documented a growing tummy and a growing family and now they have three beautiful kids running in three opposite directions.  I know exactly how the session will go, cute kids, big smiles, eager subjects, breaking out into total chaos, me laughing harder than I have laughed in ages, and then we’re done.  So after as many session as we have had I should know by now that I can only shoot for, say, 15 minutes total and wrap the session because otherwise I will end up with way.too.many.awesome.photos.  Even the so called out takes are so stinky funny I can’t bear to part with them and I know Mom and Dad well enough to know that they will enjoy them too.  I love the bond these guys have, there is nothing better than a family that just truly enjoys each other through and through.

And now I can’t decide which photos to put on the blog.

Sneak Peek | Sister and brother in Durham

A much overdue peek for Mom of two gorgeous kiddos.  When I saw them last he was just barely sitting on his own but now he is a fearless second child climbing and jumping and on the go!  We weren’t sure what to expect from the weather that day but in the end it was perfect (even if it did take us 4 months to finally make it happen after illness and weather were relentless!).  A very gorgeous family!
