Displaying your Portraits

Sometimes I show up at a client’s home for a session only to find photos from their last session(s) still sitting in their original packaging (yes, you know who you are!).  Looking at a pile of prints and trying to decide what in the world to do with them is overwhelming for sure - this coming from a person that is in a new house and still trying to decide how to hang my own prints.  I give my clients a wall gallery book to use when ordering (I think deciding on a layout BEFORE you order is the best way to go - filling in the blanks is much easier than starting from scratch) and I am working on making it bigger and better for 2010.  I am also going to incorporate into the shopping cart so you can order an entire grouping in just one click but for those that already have prints in hand, let’s get them on the walls!

I did some googling and found several resources for gallery ideas, some better than others. This article from Apartment Therapy has some cute ideas.  This one shows a photo made into wall paper - that’s some serious commitment to a portrait - but look through the other thumbnail ideas, some super cute stuff.

I do love Pottery Barn but they have a bad habit of putting tiny prints in large matted frames.  Pretty, but unless people stand within a foot of the print they are not able to see them print you’re so in love with.  If you’re a little afraid of going large measure and cut a piece of wrapping paper in the size(s) you’re considering and stick it on the wall.  I think most people are surprised to see that what SOUNDS huge isn’t so when it’s on the wall.  In fact I rarely hear from clients that they ordered too large - generally I hear that they wish they had gone bigger.

Don’t be afraid to go with non standard crops and sizes, measure your wall space and make use of the unique opportunities your home allows.  You can mix color and black and white, mix frames styles, really get as creative as you want.  Please feel free to ask me for help as well.   I really love putting together galleries and seeing the final result - please send me a snapshot of your gallery so I can share it on the blog!  A client sent me the below pictures a few months ago, she has a mix of framed prints and gallery mounts (and a gorgeous home!)

2009 Premier Baby Cover & Survivor Themed Baby Shower | Raleigh Magazine Photographer

In 2009 I had the pleasure of photographing the sweet little model for Premier Baby and Child Magazine.  Below is the shot we chose for the cover, his eyes are absolutely AMAZING!  I also photographed a baby shower with a “Survivor” theme.  The shower took place on a hot, hot, HOT summer day - so much so that the gorgeous food by Premiere Catering was melting before we could get the shots we needed.  Everything was gorgeous and just so creative, see all of the photos on my Facebook page here (and hey, become a fan while you’re there! ;-).

Sneak Peek | Twin Newborns

I have been a bit under the weather with a mystery virus and fever but today seemed to be the end of it so tomorrow I will be returning emails and voicemails.  If you don’t hear from me and you need to, please send me a note!

These sweet newborns were a month old when I got my hands on them and by that stage babies are often very alert and not as willing to play along with all of my ideas (can you blame them?).  We were able to get one settled in and comfy right away, but brother would wake.  So we would get brother settled into sweet slumber and then yes, the other would wake right up.  The best part was how they would wake each other up, sometimes a little slap to the face or even better a little wet spot on the blanket - ha!  They kept me on my toes and completely entertained these two!

Welcome 2010!

My oh my it has been a while since I was last here.  We moved into our new house at Thanksgiving and then began a whirlwind of unpacking, decorating, hosting friends and family, unpacking some more, getting holiday orders out, playing with my kids (who were tracked out from Thanksgiving to New Years), yet more unpacking, creating holidays cards (for clients of course, mine didn’t make the priority list this year!), some more unpacking…  All in all it was the most exhausting yet restful holidays I think we have ever had.  We usually fell into bed exhausted at the end of the day but having the opportunity to spend time with my family after a very (VERY) busy holiday season was just what we all needed.  And for the record I hope we never, ever, ever move again - oy!

So, here we are in 2010.  2010!  I spent 2005 building my portfolio and working behind the scenes to launch Season Moore Photography and now 5 years later I can not believe where it’s taken me.  Truly, there is no place I would rather be in my professional life and I can not thank you all enough.  Working on some big plans for the year that I can’t wait to share (!!) and in the meantime as we start a new year I thought I would share the new faces of 2009.  I love my newborn clients so much, I know you will too!

Sneak Peek! | Fearrington Portraits

My last regular sessions of 2009 were private mini sessions set up by a group of friends and neighbors on the beautiful Fearrington grounds.  Let me tell you, this is one gorgeous neighborhood!  The weather was gorgeous and the kids were as well.  It was a FANTASTIC way to wrap up the year!

Sneak Peek! | Wake Forest Family Portraits

So, this Mom is a photographer that has lots of photos of her sweet girls.  What she is lacking is what so many Mom’s are lacking - photos of themselves with their sweet kids.  I think it’s easy to find a million reasons why we don’t want to be in photos and forget that years from now these are going to be precious memories.  The weather was a little damp, and a little chilly and oddly foggy but I hope I captured what she was after!
