Doljanchi Korean Cake Smash

A Dol or doljanchi is a Korean tradition that celebrates the first birthday of a baby. This ceremony blesses the child with a prosperous future and has great significance in Korea. The birthday baby wears a hanbok and a traditional hat and a custom known as the doljabi takes place. During the doljabi the child is placed in front of a table of foods and items such as string, paint brushes, cars, and money. It is thought that the first item selected by the baby will foretell the child’s future.

This was my first experience with a dol ceremony so mom and dad helped alot by bringing items from their culture. The birthday boy did great (and he selected the race car and stethiscope at the same time if you were wondering!). I love the final look of the white and blue set and it so special to have a them that is both adorable but important to the baby’s heritage.
